Navy still accepting feedback on Marines’ transfer

By Gerardo R. Partido
Variety News Staff

THE Navy is still accepting feedback from the public on the proposed relocation of 8,000 Marines and their families from Okinawa to Guam.
Monday, May 21, is the final date for the public to postmark written comments on the environmental impact statement for the relocation of the Marines to Guam and the CNMI.
At the April scoping open houses held on Guam and in the CNMI, the public was invited to comment on what is intended to be included in the Environmental Impact Statement to be completed over the next few years.
The public was encouraged to provide written comments and suggestions as to what they think should be included in the EIS and they were asked the question, “Given these intentions of the EIS, what would be my comments or suggestions?”
In response, hundreds of written comments have been submitted, according to Capt. Robert Lee, acting director of the Joint Guam Program Office.
The EIS will analyze the impact on the community and culture of Guam and the CNMI of the enhancement of infrastructure and logistic capabilities, improvement of pier/waterfront infrastructure for transient U.S. nuclear aircraft carriers at Naval Base Guam, and the placement of a U.S. Army Ballistic Missile Defense Task Force in Guam.
Comments can be mailed to: JGPO, c/o NAVFAC Pacific, 258 Makalapa Drive, Suite 100, Pearl Harbor, HI 96860-3134, Attention: EV2.
For further information, contact Captain Robert Lee at the JGPO Guam office at 339-6156, or e-mail at Robert.Lee@guam.navy.mil.
