Funding cut affects transit hours

By Mar-Vic Cagurangan
Variety News Staff

FUNDING cuts under the revised 2007 budget take their toll on the operations of the Guam Public Transit System, prompting a cutback on transit hours starting June 1 until Sept. 30, the end of the current fiscal year.
“We sincerely apologize for all inconveniences caused by the cutback in hours. We are doing everything we can to sustain services for the public,” said Joseph Manibusan, deputy director of the Department of Administration, which supervises the transit system.
Manibusan said the cut in transit operations “is necessary due to operational costs and funding constraints.”
The revised budget Bill 74, which is awaiting the governor’s action, cuts government cost by $18 million and revises the overall budget to $471 million.
Under the bill, each agency, including the Department of Administration, gets a 1 percent budget reduction. It wasn’t clear as of press time how much has been taken out of the Guam Transit System budget.
Beginning June 1, the public bus will run from 5:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Mondays through Saturdays. The first run of the day for all routes departs at 5:30 a.m. and the final run of the day departs at 6:30 p.m. The transit system will be closed on Sundays and holidays.
