GOP drops another incumbent House member

By Emmanuel T. Erediano
Variety News Staff

ANOTHER incumbent lawmaker was not included on the Republican Party’s list of House candidates for this year’s midterm election.
Rep. Candido B. Taman was not nominated for a second term by his party’s Precinct 4 club.
Kimo M. Rosario, who resigned on Tuesday as the party secretary, said the club has chosen Sylvestre Iguel and Joseph N. Camacho as its House candidates.
The party’s Precinct 1 club has already completed its list of six House candidates, which does not include Republican Rep. Martin B. Ada, who has been aligned with the Covenant leadership in the House of Representatives.
Commonwealth Ports Authority board member Barbara Yamada also sought the GOP nomination in Precinct 4.
Taman, who was on Guam yesterday to attend to a family affair, earlier said he would seek a second term with or without the GOP’s endorsement.
Meanwhile, the GOP board is still waiting for the clubs of Precincts 2 and 3 to complete their slates.
Precinct 2 has two House seats but, so far, only Raymond Palacios is wiling to challenge the two incumbent Covenant lawmakers — Speaker Oscar M. Babauta and Rep. Jesus SN. Lizama.
Eric Atalig, who ran and lost as the party’s Precinct 2 candidate in 2005, has backed out this year.
Precinct 3, where former Speaker Heinz S. Hofschneider leads the list of GOP House candidates, still has one slot vacant.
The GOP board hopes to convince either Rep. Stanley T. Torres or former Rep. Benjamin A. Sablan to run for the House instead of the Senate.
