A six-run first
inning was all San Vicente Elementary School needed to notch the first
finals seat in the girls division of the 2006-2007 Elementary School
Fast-pitch Softball tournament.
The Lady Canaries strong start lifted them to a 9-4 victory over
Gregorio T. Camacho Elementary School in a semifinals match in Pool A
yesterday at the Miguel Tan Ge Basa Pangelinan Ballfield.
San Vicente will face in the winner-take-all championship match the winner
of the Pool B semis match, which will feature Koblerville Elementary School
and Oleai Elementary School.
The Pool B semis game is set for today at 3:30 p.m.
The Lady Canaries scored one run after another ending the bottom of the
first with a 6-0 lead.
GTC could have been down by a bigger margin had tournament rules allowed
the offensive team to score more than six runs in an inning.
In this years fast-pitch softball tournament, after a team scores
six runs in an inning, the other team automatically has its turn at the
plate, even if the offensive squad has yet to have three outs.
GTC recovered in the second inning scoring two runs, but the Lady Canaries
answered with a three-run third to take a 9-2 advantage.
GTC had a last chance to recover at the top of the seventh, but scored
only one run. Its second batter made the lone run, while the three other
batters were beaten to first base.
Meanwhile, San Vicente was playing the boys semifinals yesterday.
After the first complete inning, the Canaries and the Garapan Mallards
were tied at 6-all.
The final results of the match were unavailable at press time.
The winner of the Canaries-Mallards match will square off with the victor
of the Koblerville Elementary School-William S. Reyes Elementary School
tiff for the boys title tomorrow.
San Vicente advanced to the semifinals after sweeping all four games in
the regular season both in the boys and girls divisions
GTC gained a semis seat in the girls division after finishing with
a 2-2 slate, while Garapan moved into the playoffs in the boys division
after ending the regular season with a 3-1 slate.
The Koblerville Umangs were both undefeated in the boys and girls
division sweeping all three matches, while the WSR Kingfishers and Oleai
