FIRE broke out at the Guam
Power Authoritys Cabras 4 generator in Piti early last night, resulting
in power outages in several villages.
GPA public information officer Art Perez said there were no fatalities
but there were some minor injuries caused mostly by smoke inhalation.
Perez said all GPA personnel were accounted for and secured in an area
outside the power plant.
As of press time yesterday, the fire was under control but there were
still some small isolated fires in sections of the deck where the main
generator engine is located.
Perez said Guam Fire Department personnel were going section by section
putting out the remaining isolated fires.
But there was no fire in the main engine room, said Perez,
who immediately rushed to the scene when news of the fire broke.
The power outage started shortly after 6 p.m. and as of press time yesterday,
several parts of Yigo and Dededo were still without power.
GPA expected power would be restored to those areas by 12 midnight.
As of now, we dont want to speculate on the cause of the fire.
Well wait for the GFD report and then well send a team along
with personnel from the contractor operating the generator, Perez
said.
Last week, GPA warned that if its base rate hike petition is not approved,
its generators might break down due to lack of maintenance.
