MOC1 West Side relay

By Kyle Terwilliger
Variety News Staff

THE West Side Relay finished off the MOC1 series last Saturday. Racing 30 miles from Tumon to Nimitz Beach in Agat paddlers had flat seas and hot conditions for the race.
Although there was some swell from the Paseo to the Glass Breakwater, for the most part the racers had to just power it out with little wind or surf to ride. Imua paddlers Tom Strohmeyer, Brian Quichocho and Rick Appleton teamed with Animun Tasi’s Colin Smith to take first overall on a Stingray OC2.
Having a lead into the first change, the quartet increased their lead every leg finishing in 5:14:44. Second officially was an all women crew from Poksai of OGCC. Breaking the 6 hour barrier Annie Gayle, Michele Cerizo, Nat Calvo and Ann Marie Gawel were happy to cross the line in 5:55:21. The perennial top Masters OC1 crew of Dick Soriano and Joe Perez won their division in 6:06:56.
