THE Guam Police Department
arrested and charged an 18-year-old student at George Washington High
School with four counts of conspiracy to commit assault and eight counts
of jurisdiction over an adult in connection with the videotaped mixed
martial arts fight staged on the Mangilao campus two weeks ago.
Lonnie Clark was released under advisement from the Attorney Generals
Office.
Seven minor students at George Washington High School were also in custody
and appeared before a juvenile court judge last week. However, because
of standing local judicial rules, members of the media were not allowed
in the courtroom and were not given information as to what took place
during the hearing.
GPD public information officer Allan Guzman told Variety that the case
is still ongoing and there may be more arrests.
Last week, Education Superintendent Luis Reyes held an emergency press
conference and played the video that showed GWHS students in a mixed martial
arts fight in a hallway at the campus.
The footage sparked numerous questions. Guam Education Policy Board chairman
Peter Alexcis Ada asked; Where were the teachers, school aides,
and administrators?
Reyes and a local mixed martial arts coordinator joined forces to stop
the fights taking place on school grounds.
PXC coordinator Eli Monge earlier told Variety that he was not happy with
what the students are doing on school grounds.
Beginning this week, PXC fighters will be featured on several television
commercials that would push for the No Violence in School
campaign as a way to deter students from fighting in and out of school.
The Guam Public School System reminds students that fighting on school
grounds calls for expulsion, as per the Zero Tolerance initiative
implemented by the GPSS superintendent and the education board.
