Navy to hold force protection exercise

By Gerardo R. Partido
Variety News Staff

THE Navy is advising residents that it is holding a force protection exercise starting today until May 25.
Motorists can expect delays at base entrances to Naval Base Guam, Naval Hospital Guam and other installations.
The Navy routinely conducts force protection exercises to assess its posture of readiness in case of attack or other disasters, as well as to test its command and control procedures.
Lately, Navy force protection exercises worldwide have focused on responses to terrorist actions that have actually happened and killed dozens of Navy personnel over the last 10 years.
On Guam, the purpose of this week’s exercises is to further enhance Navy personnel’s ability to effectively respond to threats to naval installations and assets on island.
The scenario for the Guam exercises will consist of bomb threat responses, an armed robbery incident, breaches in harbor security, domestic violence response procedures, intelligence gathering scenarios, a mass casualty drill and a variety of possible threats and incidents on board U.S. Naval Base Guam, according to the Navy’s Security Training Department
Personnel and units participating in these exercises have already been identified but the Navy said personnel not designated to actively participate in the exercises are still requested to make reports and notifications of suspicious activities to Navy security at 333-2989.
