Guam’s first Chamorro Marine officer remembered

By Gerardo R. Partido

GUAM leaders are mourning the passing of Captain Peter Siguenza Sr., the island’s first Chamorro Marine Corps officer.
Gov. Felix P. Camacho described Siguenza as a hero who made history and set an example for all patriots of Guam.
“He was a brave and great man who did so much for Guam and inspired so many of our youth to serve our country in the Marine Corps. The lieutenant governor, the first lady, Mrs. Cruz and I give our sincere condolences to the Siguenza family and offer any assistance we can during this difficult time,” the governor said in a statement.
Siguenza, who died last week at the age of 87, proudly served Guam and the nation as both an active officer and reservist of the U.S. Marine Corps, where he received the prestigious Purple Heart Award.
Siguenza was also actively involved in the Marine Corps Division Association and was a notable civil servant under Governors Skinner, Elvidge and Lowe, aside from serving Guam as a board member for several government and community organizations.
Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo, who is also Siguenza’s brother-in-law, described Siguenza as a dedicated family man, a devout Christian, an American patriot, a brave war hero, and a great Chamorro.
Bordallo said Siguenza’s love for the island, for Chamorro culture and traditions, and for the country was surpassed only by his love for his family and God.
“Peter was one of the pillars of our family, and he will always be an outstanding role model for the young men of Guam. He will be truly missed by our community but his life and upstanding character will always be remembered,” the congresswoman said.
