Peched and Ngermid, the two
teams that played in the finals of Division I playoffs, have extended
their head-to-head collision.
Both teams swept their respective opponents in the semifinal round of
the ongoing 2007 NBL Season playoffs to arrange a best-of-five championship
series.
Game One will start on Monday.
Peched wrapped-up the best-of-three semifinal series, 2-0, against Meda
with a 75-63 victory in Game Two last Wednesday night.
Before that, the Rivals staved off an 84-83 win In Game Two over the Surangel
Suns and also swept the best-of three series in the other semifinal encounter.
On Monday, the Rivals defeated the Suns in Game One, 93-72, while Peched
defeated Meda, 74-72.
Although the Rivals controlled the tempo of the game most of the time,
the Suns took a 30-21 run in the third quarter and even led most in that
stretch until the early fourth quarter, the last time at 70-67.
The loss of Andy Johnson, who did not come back in the game after a hard
fall, proved too costly for the Suns.
The Rivals rallied back with a 7-0 blast behind set-up plays by Javis
Pedro and Olson and three points from the free throw line from Spis Gordon
and Bonny for a 78-73 lead.
From the on, the Rivals never looked back.
With the Rivals infront at 84-78, the Suns were able to cut the deficit
to just a point capped by a three-pointer by Eric Manio with 48 ticks
to go.
In the next play, Ody Yalap missed from three-point range while the Suns
after getting the rebound missed one from beyond the arc and a perimeter
jumper from Manio before the buzzer sounded.
Javis and Jake led the Rivals with 27 and 26 points while Alvin Soguilon
and Andy Johnson had 24 and 23 while Arnold Undecimo added 16 for the
Suns.
"We were just lucky to win. We played hard for this win," the
Rivals team manager Greg Gordon said after the game.
He said that its not going to be easy to play in the finals against
Peched, which they beat twice in the elimination round but lost in the
Division I finals.
The defending champion Peched established a 17-10 lead in the opening
quarter on the way to the easy win over Meda.
Joe Joe Robertsled Peched with 15, Calson Dulei and Sunshine had 14 while
Markus added 11.
Coach Ateley Kazuma expressed confidence that they will win their first
back to back title.
Most of the players are now with the national team despite only two of
the players are going to the Pacific Games in Apia Samoa.
