TAIPEI (Pacnews) — Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian has presented a medal to Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare.
That’s in recognition of his long-term support of Taiwan. The Solomon Islands is one of Taiwan’s 25 remaining diplomatic allies.
On Wednesday, Chen expressed his gratitude for Sogavare’s friendship. Sogavare made a pro-Taiwan speech at the United Nations last September.
The Solomon Islands also voted in support of Taiwan’s bid for membership in the World Health Assembly on Monday.
Sogavare reiterated the Solomon Islands’ support for Taiwan in joining the international community. He also said he will make further efforts to strengthen ties with Taiwan.
The meeting concluded with a joint communiqué between Taiwan and the Solomon Islands.
