THE Smiths Sonic Booms were forced to a draw by Fiesta Fuerza, while
the Grand Mean Striking Machine ended the regular season of the Spring
2007 NMIFA Womens Recreational League with a bang.
The Sonic Booms despite drawing their last game against Fiesta, 2-2, last
Saturday finished the regular season on top of the team standings with
12 points. The Sonic Booms had three wins and three draws.
Fiesta was winless drawing three games and losing three matches.
Brenda Schultz delivered both goals for the Sonic Booms. She made one
in the first half off an assist from Maryanna Gramlich. Her second goal
was an unassisted one in the second half.
Fiesta scored both goals in the second half with Becca Rath connecting
on a penalty kick and Lindsay Davis hitting one on a breakaway play.
In the second game last Saturday, the Striking Machines returned to the
Oleai Sports Complex Field after playing two straight games at the Airport
Field and notched an impressive 3-0 win over the Pacific Island Clubs
Pretty Incredible Chicks.
Becca Newman, team captain Morgan Rose and young striker Zoe Jewell nailed
one goal apiece for Grand, which ended the regular season with a 2-2-2
(win-loss-draw) record.
Newman and Rose nailed one goal each in the first half, while Jewell hit
one in the second half.
The win put the Striking Machines in the No. 2 spot in the final team
standings after earning eight points in six games.
PIC had the same record as the Striking Machines, but lost in the tiebreak,
as the latter had more goals with 12 compared to the formers 10.
Fiesta and the Sonic Booms will collide at the start of the playoffs on
Saturday at 8:30 p.m with the winner advancing to the do-or-die finals.
The second semis match at 10 a.m. will feature the Striking Machines and
the Incredible Chicks.
The championship match is set for May 28.
