OVER 100 acres of property
were affected by a grassfire in the Nimitz Hill area yesterday afternoon,
according to Guam Fire Department spokesperson Phyllis Blas.
The fire was reported at 12:34 p.m. as an uncontrolled burning which eventually
spread into other areas.
The fire began on Turner Road in Nimitz Hill and made its way through
Sasa Valley.
Numerous agencies including GFD, the Department of Agricultures
Forestry unit, the Guam Environmental Protection Agency, the Office of
Civil Defense, and the Navys Fire units responded to the fire.
Officials were able to save about nine homes from the fire as of press
time.
When the fire first got out of hand, Civil Defense officials prevented
residents from going home or motorists from entering the area. However,
sources told Variety that officials reopened the area and allowed motorists
and residents into the area.
As of press time, emergency officials remained on site to closely monitor
the fire in case it got closer to any of the other homes in the area.
Sources also said there are GFD engines on stand-by in case the fire creeps
back into the residential area.
A Navy fire engine left the scene earlier in the afternoon as they had
to make their way to the border of the Navys fuel tanks to be sure
the fire does not encroach into the area.
