THE Tanapag Falcons claimed the third playoffs slot in the 2007 Budweiser Saipan Major League baseball tournament after whipping the Ford Rangers, 11-1, last Monday at the Francisco “Tan Ko” Palacios Ballfield.
The win improved the Falcons record to 5-4 and put them in third place in the team standings joining the defending champion Bud Kings and the Rangers in the semifinals.
The Masters and the Young Guns will be fighting for the last semis ticket.
The Falcons ended the game early at the seventh inning by playing tough defense, especially on the outfield.
Falcons pitcher Jess Taitano allowed no hits in the first four innings, while the team’s outfielders flied out seven batters.
J. J Laniyo made the Rangers’ first base hit at the bottom of the fifth, but was left stranded on second base, as the Rangers next three batters where thrown out.
Cris Silil ended the Rangers’ silence as he scored a run on a Mario Sablan single.
But that was the only time that the Rangers made it into the scoreboard, as the Falcons returned to business and finished the game early.
No Rangers batter was able to have more than one hit with Silil, Sablan and Laniyo all going 1-for-3. Peter Tomokane and Bill Tagabuel were 0-for-3, while Craig Sanchez and Jesus Iguel both went 0-for-2.
Overall, the Rangers went 4-for-24.
The Falcons performed better at the plate going 12-for-33.
