Event coordinator Sonia G. Siwa said the activity coincided with the observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

“It’s a holiday so more kids were able to join the cleanup,” she added.

The volunteers included 27 children with the Saipan Awaodori Team and seven staff members of Kinpachi Restaurant.

Siwa said the cleanup drive started at 9 a.m. and covered an area that included the Paseo de Marianas as well as portions of Coral Tree Avenue, Micro Beach Road, and Beach Road and connecting alleys.

Siwa said they collected 540 lbs of trash.

“Most of our volunteers are young kids and they may not fully understand the concept of volunteer cleanup, but their taking part in this at an early age will help establish this kind of community service to be a regular part of their lives,” she said.

The volunteers picked up different kinds of trash from dried leaves to soda cans.

“This is a great opportunity for them to be outside and begin to learn about giving back locally and taking pride in their community,” she added
