House panel eyes $142M budget for FY 2017

THE House Committee on Ways and Means will propose a $142 million budget for fiscal year 2017 which starts on Oct. 1, 2016.

The committee chaired by Rep Antonio Sablan is now wrapping up its deliberations on the budget bill and is expected to be finished by early this week.
The members agreed to set the total appropriation at $142,209,601 which includes $5,184,376 for the Department of Public Lands.
According to the summary prepared by the committee, the Department of Finance will likely get its requested budget which is $4.8 million; the Department of Public Safety, $6 million; and the Department of Corrections, $4.5 million.
The Department of Community and Cultural Affairs, which requested a $2.4 million budget, will receive $2.5 million under the committee’s proposal.
But the budget bill is still expected to be amended once it reaches the Senate which is dominated by Rota and Tinian.
Sablan said the Senate will always have its own budget version.
In the past, bicameral conference committees have had to be convened to come up with a budget version acceptable to both chambers.
Lawmakers must pass a new and balanced budget on or before Oct. 1, 2016. Otherwise there will be a partial government shutdown.
