Yan Long Yu pleads guilty to ice possession

YAN Long Yu pled guilty in Superior Court on Tuesday to illegal possession of a controlled substance — ice — and will serve two years in prison and pay a fine of $2,000.

After the change-of-plea hearing, Yan Long Yu, 24, was remanded to the custody of the Department of Corrections.

His lawyer, Joaquin D.L.G. Torres, asked the court to allow his client to report to Corrections on the following day, but Judge Teresa Kim-Tenorio denied the request.

The judge ordered the counsels to submit their sentencing memorandum on Feb. 6, 2018, and set the sentencing hearing for Feb. 12, 2018.

Assistant Attorney Chester Hinds appeared for the government at the change-of-plea hearing.

Yan Long Yu was initially charged with conspiracy to commit trafficking of a controlled-substance, but because of plea negotiations and his potential future cooperation with the Office of the Attorney General and Department of Public Safety, the charge was amended to illegal possession of a controlled substance.
