REPRESENTATIVE Lorenzo Deleon Guerrero has asked the Board of Education to implement an interscholastic sports program for the Public School System.

In a letter to Board of Education Chairwoman Marylou Ada, Deleon Guerrero said he is also seeking clarity regarding the lack of interscholastic sports program in CNMI schools.

Deleon Guerrero, in an interview, said a lot of residents, including students, want to know why there are no sports activities offered in schools.

“I note that private school students are actively engaged in sports,” he added. “I also note that our governor endorses sporting events.”

Deleon Guerrero, in his letter to Ada, said there are federal and local funds allotted this fiscal year to support sports programs for schools.

“But I am also hearing there are non-organized sports teams,” he told Ada. “Please correct me if I am wrong. The fundamental intent of interscholastic activities in schools is to provide lifelong and life-quality learning experiences to students while enhancing their achievement of educational goals. These experiences and lessons relate as much to life and education as they do to the outcome on a scoreboard.”

He added, “Interscholastic is an extension that provides teaching and learning experiences for all involved beyond the walls of a classroom. It is logically linked to the objectives and the academic mission of our schools.”

PSS said it will soon hire a sports director.
