Government should revisit land regulations that affect businesses: RB Camacho

CURRENT rules work against the government’s beautification efforts, former Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council Chairman Ramon B. Camacho said.

He said there are businesses willing to develop and beautify public property five feet from the edge of the highway to their establishments.

However, he added, this requires paperwork and the payment of fees.

Camacho, who used to spearhead the adopt-a-place program, said public property in front of a business establishment is usually unpaved, causing inconvenience to customers.

“It is also hazardous because a vehicle often has to abruptly slow down, if not stop, before entering the parking lot of the establishment,” he said.

The Department of Public Lands can either issue a waiver to a business establishment that wants to beautify nearby public property or DPL itself should do it, he added.

In a separate interview, Rep. Lorenzo I. Deleon Guerrero said regulatory agencies should look into the concerns of businesses.

“Any and all regulations have to be revisited to make improvements,” he said, adding that they should conform to existing conditions

Deleon Guerrero said many regulations are decades old and need to be updated.

But he said there is also a need for more enforcement of regulations on the part of regulatory agencies.
