Senate approves nursing scholarship bill

THE Senate on Thursday approved a measure to award scholarships to students admitted into the nursing program at Northern Marianas College.

All nine members voted for Senate Bill 20-71, which was introduced by Senate President Arnold Palacios. It now goes now to the House of Representatives.

The bill will provide scholarships to 20 eligible NMC nursing students. In exchange, they must work as nurses at the Commonwealth Health Center, the Tinian Health Center or the Rota Health Center “for a few years.”

Each eligible student will receive $8,000 per year for a period of two years to assist them with tuition fees, textbooks, transportation and housing.

The bill stated that three scholarship slots will be reserved for both Tinian and Rota, but in the event that these scholarships slots are not utilized, then they will be made available to residents of Saipan.

The scholarship funding will come from the CNMI Scholarship Office.

Senate President Arnold Palacios said the CNMI is at a critical crossroads with the uncertain state of the CW program.

He said one way of encouraging students to pursue a career in nursing is to provide incentives in the form of scholarships.
