Tourist drowns at Managaha

A 62-year-old Chinese tourist drowned in the waters off Managaha on Tuesday, Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services public information officer Derek Gersonde said.

The victim was Shizhao Zhang.

Gersonde said at 11:40 a.m. on Tuesday, DFEMS received a call from the Department of Public Safety-911 dispatch regarding the need for an ambulance in connection with a possible drowning incident.

At 11:42 a.m., Gersonde said Medic-2 and Engine-2 from the Garapan Fire Station, and Rescue-1 from the Susupe Fire Station were dispatched and arrived at Smiling Cove Marina 10 minutes later.

Emergency medical technicians found a Managaha lifeguard performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the victim, Gersonde said.

The patient, he added, had no pulse and was not breathing. EMTs opened the patient’s airway and performed CPR on scene and continued to do so in the ambulance until reaching the Commonwealth Health Center’s Emergency Room at 11:57 a.m.

Upon arriving at CHC, the EMTs transferred the patient into the CHC-trauma room where ER staff took over until resuscitation efforts were stopped and the patient was pronounced deceased by Dr. Villalon at 12:06 noon.
