Jose Santos gets over 12 years for sexual abuse of a minor

A 56-year-old man charged with sexual abuse of a minor received a prison sentence on Tuesday.

Superior Court Judge Kenneth L. Govendo sentenced Jose Albert Santos to 15 years imprisonment, 2.5 years suspended with no possibility of parole or early release.

Santos will also be placed on 10 years of probation and must register with the CNMI Sex Offender Registry.

Santos was charged with sexually assaulting a 15-year-old boy on at least three occasions.

A family member reported the sexual abuse incident to the Department of Public Safety on Oct. 5, 2014. After every instance of sexual abuse, the boy said Santos would give him between $2 and $10.

Santos is classified as a Tier 2 registered CNMI sex offender. On March 18, 1998, Santos pled guilty to committing sexual abuse of a child and was imprisoned. He was released on April 3, 1998.

At the hearing on Tuesday, Santos appeared with Assistant Public Defender Cindy Nesbit who recommended an eight-year sentence.

But Assistant Attorney General Teri Tenorio, who appeared for the government, said the court should impose the maximum term of 15 years imprisonment, day for day without the possibility of parole.

Santos’s family members spoke at the sentencing hearing and asked the court to impose the sentence recommended by the defense counsel.
