Senate confirms new MVA board member

THE Senate on Thursday confirmed the appointment of Agida T. Quitugua as a member of the Marianas Visitors Authority board representing Rota.

Quitugua was unanimously confirmed by all eight senators present. Senate President Arnold Palacios was off island so Vice President Steve Mesngon served as the presiding officer.

The Senate conducted a public hearing on Quitugua’s appointment in Rota on Jan. 10, 2018, according to Sen. Frank Cruz, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Executive Appointments and Government Investigations. He said the nominee received “overwhelming support from the community.”

Cruz said “right now, there’s no economic activity going on in Rota so we expect that once she is confirmed, she will come up with some ideas to help Rota prosper and improve people’s lives.”

Sen. Paul Manglona said Quitugua has been working for many years for the Rota Department of Commerce.

“She understands the many economic challenges that our island is facing. She will be a great asset to MVA. I am confident also that she will continue working on former MVA board member Vince Calvo’s tourism vision for Rota and the CNMI.”

Sen. Teresita Santos commended the governor and the lt. governor for nominating Quitugua. “Based on her background and personality, she will be able to represent the island of Rota well on the MVA board,” Santos said.
