Okeanos Marianas offers free rides to Tinian

OKEANOS Marianas is offering free rides to Saipan residents who want to go to Tinian for the pika festival on Feb. 17 to 19.

Okeanos Marianas Sustainable Sea Transport Ltd. managing director Emma Perez said those interested may call 285-7342 for reservations.

“If you want to ride on the Okeanos canoe to Tinian, call us — just make sure that you show up,” she said. There will be no charge for the canoe rides.

Another traditional canoe, Neni, will also sail to Tinian.

Tinian Mayor Joey P. San Nicolas is inviting everyone to join in the island’s celebration of its famous donne sali.

“It will start on Saturday. We will have many events, many booths,” he said.

There will be a dragon boat race, a hot-pepper-eating contest, a cooking contest, and live bands, the mayor said.

He said they are dedicating this year’s Tinian Hot Pepper Festival to Helen F. Ichihara, who passed away in January. “The festival was her idea,” San Nicolas added.
