Mayor Apatang’s fundraising event draws huge crowd

HUNDREDS of supporters, including key political figures, attended Saipan Mayor David M. Apatang’s fundraising event on Saturday at the Minatchom Atdao pavilion.

Apatang, who is running on the Republican slate, said he will host another fundraising event on his birthday, July 14.

Former Speaker Oscar M. Babauta,  Apatang’s campaign chairman, said the turnout on Saturday was “overwhelming” and included Gov. Ralph D.L.G. Torres, Senate President Arnold I. Palacios, other elected officials and business people.

In an interview, Apatang said his administration has accomplished a lot already, but “I still want to do more for the community.”

This includes the implementation of a house-numbering system on Saipan and the village identity project with the Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council.

Apatang also wants Saipan to become a chartered municipality.

“In order to accomplish these programs we have to put our heads together will all the agencies,” he said, adding that his office’s beautification project, for example, will continue with the collaboration of the Marianas Visitors Authority.

Asked about the mayoral bid of Ramon “RB” Camacho, Babauta said they welcome any candidate’s “participation in our democratic process that allows people to select their leaders.”

As for Apatang, Babauta said the mayor is already known for his good and consistent performance as well as service to the community.

“There is no question that he is doing a good job,” Babauta added.
