CPA approves air carrier incentives program

THE Commonwealth Ports Authority board on Tuesday morning approved a plan to offer incentives to new air carriers that fly to the CNMI.

In an interview, CPA board chairman Jose Lifoifoi said they still have to work on details before they can implement the program that may include waiving or reducing landing fees, rental fees or fuel flowage fees.cpaLogo05

Lifoifoi said the Federal Aviation Administration allows promotional incentives for new air services. He added that “new service” means “not currently served” and/or “new entrant carrier.”

The CPA board, he added, will also determine whether the incentives are limited to only one year and whether they can be extended to airlines providing service to the commonwealth.

Lifoifoi said the plan is now on the table for discussion.

He expects the board to come up with a mutually beneficial program in the next couple of months.
