CUC plans to replace engine 4

BESIDES engine 8, the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. is also considering replacing engine 4 at Power Plant 1, CUC Executive Director Gary Camacho said on Friday.

“We have some issues with engine 4 and we want to replace it as well,” he said, adding that they are looking at producing additional 18 to 19 megawatts of power once the two engines are replaced.

He said CUC is now working with the Office of the Attorney General to finalize the proposal for the acquisition of the engine before they present it to the CUC board of directors for review.

Camacho said CUC  intends to announce a request for proposals for the acquisition of the two engines after the initial plan to get a consultant failed due to unresponsive bidders.

“We need to do everything to maximize our generation and operation capacity,” he said, adding that additional power production will support the economic growth on Saipan.

“We want to ensure we have reliable power service,” Camacho said.

CUC still has funding from its operating revenue for the procurement of the power engines.

At present, he said CUC is also working on a plan to build a new 120-megawatt power plant on Saipan.
