Job fair draws 200 applicants

THE local Department of Labor’s second job fair  on Saturday drew around 200 applicants and 40 companies seeking U.S. qualified workers.

Satisfied with the good turnout, DOL Secretary Vicky Benavente said the department also plans to hold similar job fairs on Tinian and Rota.

The job fair, held at the multi-purpose center, started at 9 a.m. and ended at 3 p.m. Applicants included students, high school and college graduates as well as nonresidents.

Patrick Candoleta, U.S. DOL Wage & Hour Division assistant district director for Guam and CNMI, was the guest speaker. He answered questions from employers and applicants.

In his remarks, he talked about wages, the rights of employees and the duties of employers.

Most of the questions involved CW issues including their repatriation. But Candoleta, saying he didn’t want to create confusion, referred some questions to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

Benavente said participating included construction firms, hotels, restaurants, childcare providers and manpower agencies, as well as the CNMI Scholarship Office and Northern Marianas College.

“We are still working on the schedule, but we have to help our sister islands too,” she added.
