Colorado company gets contract for CUC power pole installation project

THE Commonwealth Utilities Corp. has contracted a Colorado company to install new concrete power poles on Saipan, CUC Executive Director Gary Camacho said.

On Feb. 28, he said the bid review committee awarded  Primary Source Electric or PSE the contract for the electric power pole mitigation project.

CUC’s procurement office will issue a notice to proceed to the contractor, Camacho said, adding that the project will start on April 26.

Camacho said PSE will replace  474 wooden poles with concrete ones.

“We have until August this year to replace the wooden poles. That’s the deadline set by [Federal Emergency Management Agency]. Otherwise we might be liable for the cost,” he told Variety.

In Nov. 2015, CUC completed the installation of 222 power poles, each measuring 45 feet long.

In Sept. 2015, fifty-one 55-foot power poles were installed.

As of April 14, CUC installed an additional sixty-eight 45-foot concrete poles.

CUC power division manager Lee Lieto said they will schedule power interruptions to de-energize primary lines during the installation of the new concrete power poles.
