MYPros and Million Dollar Scholars invite community to Decision Day

(Press Release) — On Tuesday, May 1, 2018, the Million Dollar Scholars or MDS in partnership with the Marianas Young Professionals, or MYPros, will be proudly hosting the first big Million Dollar Scholars Decision Day at the Hyatt Regency Saipan from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

This will be an important day for our community’s young scholars as they will announce their colleges of choice and briefly explain why they chose those schools.

“Decision Day” happens every May 1st and is known in higher education as the last day students can choose which college they would like to attend in the fall. This year will be the first time we celebrate Decision Day in the CNMI, and MYPRos and MDS will be honoring students by hosting an event to celebrate their decision to continue their education.

MDS is expecting 40-50 scholars to be in attendance, as well as their family and friends. The organization is also encouraging all members of the community who wish to show their support for the scholars to also attend.

Events Committee Chair Monique Sablan encourages our community to show up in support of our youth. “We’re trying to sell 175 tickets at the door to ensure all our students who are announcing this monumental decision for their life will be able to attend. Tickets to the event, which costs $30, will offset the cost of students attending. We’re hoping the community comes to give back to our young scholars.”

MDS Chair and Founder Gerald Van Gils is hoping this event will encourage more students to return to the CNMI post-college graduation. “We are very excited for our Million Dollar Scholars Decision Day event. Our efforts aim to boost the morale of our scholars and inspire a sense of community belonging, which will help motivate the students to return home after completing their degrees. We hope to make this a signature annual event for MDS and inspire more of our youth to pursue higher education.”

Tickets to the event are $30 and will be sold at the door, but please RSVP online at the following link to reserve your seat: http://mypros.org/rsvpmaker/1st-million-dollar-scholars-decision-day-event-2018-2018-05-01/

Background

Million Dollar Scholars was created to help improve higher education statistics in the CNMI. MDS began its mission with Kagman High School, helping students win scholarships/grants, improve SAT scores, and raise funds to send them abroad to their college of choice.

As a result of this success, the program has expanded to other Public schools around Saipan and has since added a successful mentorship program. And recently, MDS has partnered with MYPros in an effort to increase outreach for the program.

The Marianas Young Professionals is an organic, independent organization that aims to provide young professionals with unique opportunities for professional development, entrepreneurial endeavors, networking, mentoring, and civic engagement

The group is diverse as it consists of marketing executives, doctors, lawyers, nurses, political leaders, teachers, and business leaders among a variety of different professionals. For the first time, young professionals are interacting and exchanging ideas that will bring the CNMI into the future.

MYPros initially formed in February of 2015 and with a pro-active membership of diverse individuals, the organization hopes to continue to motivate young leaders towards success.

This year, MYPros began with their kick-off Membership Meeting with a Brunch Mixer on February 25th, 2018, where they announced a new board member, Gerard “G” Van Gils, and welcomed new members and committee chairs. Since then, MYPros has hosted a BBQ Picnic for Million Dollar Scholars, their 2nd Quarter Membership Meeting, Mentor-For-A-Meal, their 2nd Annual March for H.E.R.S, as well as their first ever Focus Group. In conjunction, MYPros launched their “Rock the Vote” initiative in an effort to encourage more voter registration amongst CNMI residents in preparation for the upcoming 2018 elections.
