$1K cash prize for winner of fried-chicken-eating competition

THIS Saturday, a celebrity food fighter from Japan will be the special guest of the Taste of the Marianas International Food Festival and Beer Garden at American Memorial Park.

The Marianas Visitor Authority has invited professional competitive eater Sachiyo Masubuchi to take part in the J’s fried-chicken-eating competition. The top prize is $1,000.

MVA Managing Director Chris Concepcion said Masubuchi is not only famous in Japan as a food fighter, she is also a TV personality, model, actress and beauty contestant.

He said Masubuchi has eaten enormous amounts of food at food challenges.

She has a big YouTube following, and MVA wants to use her celebrity power to attract media attention to the CNMI, he added.

Today, Friday, MVA will host a “competition sneak peek” with Masubuchi at 7:30 p.m. at J’s Restaurant in Garapan.

Participants in the competition on Saturday have to finish 30 pieces of chicken, 15 drumsticks and 15 thighs — in 30 minutes.

The winner will receive $1,000. The second place finisher will win $200 in Taste of The Marianas tokens, and the 3rd place finisher will win $100 in Taste tokens.

Should no competitor complete the challenge, consolations prizes will be awarded: $300 in Taste tokens for 1st place, $200 in Taste tokens for 2nd place, and $100 for 3rd place.

“We’re calling on anyone who thinks they can eat more than Masubuchi to participate in the first ever J’s fried-chicken-eating competition,” Concepcion said.

Taste of the Marianas starts at 7 p.m. on Saturday at American Memorial Park.
