Winners announced in Ninth Circuit civics contest

DISTRICT Court for the NMI Chief Judge Ramona V. Manglona and Magistrate Judge Heather Kennedy announced  the 2018 Ninth Circuit, district-level winners in the civics essay and video contest submissions on Tuesday.

Joshua Alfred won 1st prize in the essay contest. Eric Kiser was 2nd,  Maria Gregoire was third and receiving honorable mention were Theresa Zheng and Monica Aira Usi.

For videos, Jeff Melchor, Angelo Manase  and Justin Ocampo took 1st place.

The winners will receive cash prizes and certificates.

The contest was open to  high school students, and the topic was the 14th Amendment: “What does equal protection mean to students?”

The competition is held throughout the 15 districts in the Ninth Circuit which includes Alaska, Arizona, Central California, Eastern California, Northern California, Southern California, Montana, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Eastern Washington, Western Washington, Hawaii, Guam and the CNMI.

The District Court conducted the preliminary judging for the contest, and those winning videos and essays will compete in the Ninth Circuit-level contest.

In the CNMI there were 21 essays submitted and four videos.
