Japanese group to hold peace memorial service in NMI

MEMBERS of the Tokowaka Chokokukai group from Nagano, Japan will visit Saipan and Tinian for their annual pilgrimage on Tuesday, May 22.

This year, 21 delegates will take part in  a ceremony at the memorial shrines, event facilitator Mayuni Toninos said.

The delegates will include young shrine maidens who will perform “Urayasu-no-mai,” an elegant dance that is part of a ritual appeal for world peace.

The group is visiting Saipan and Tinian for the 17th straight year to hold memorial services for those who died in the NMI during World War II.

In 2015, the Tokowaka Chokokukai group installed a shrine gate at the Japanese Peace Memorial on Tinian, Tonino said, adding that the group will officially open the Goshintai monument in the area this week.
