MHS student to participate in West Point Summer Leaders Program

MARIANAS High School student Carl Joseph T. Garon is one of a 1,000 students selected to attend West Point’s Summer Leaders Experience program in June.

More than 5,000 juniors nationwide applied for the program which offers high school students the opportunity to experience life at West Point, including living in the cadet barracks, eating in the Cadet Mess, and participating in academic, leadership, athletic, and military workshops.

Garon, a junior at MHS, is the second in the family to participate in the  program.  His sister, Alyanna, was a participant last year. She said the one-week training strengthened her decision to pursue a college education.

For the short-term program, West Point requires the student participants to have good academic standing and show leadership skills.

“They want to know your grades, and if you are part of the Honor Society. They want to know about your activities that showcase your leadership skills,” she added.

She said the summer program is not focused on military fitness training. “It includes academics. Participants can choose three of the 15 workshops being offered.”

The one-week program is designed to help juniors with their college-selection process, while giving them an idea of the importance of leadership and sound decision-making in their careers and in their lives in general.
