Man arrested for assaulting girlfriend

A 27-year-old man was arrested on Saturday in Koblervile for pulling his girlfriend’s hair and punching and kicking her.

Lando Towai appeared for a bail hearing before Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho on Monday and was charged with assault and battery, and disturbing the peace.

Judge Camacho imposed a $10,000 cash bail on Towai who was represented by Chief Public Defender Douglas Hartig. Assistant Attorney General Frances T. Demapan appeared for the government.

After the hearing the judge remanded Towai to the custody of the Department of Corrections and ordered  the defendant to return to court on May 31 at 1:30 a.m. for  a preliminary hearing, and on June 11 at 9 a.m. for his arraignment.

The victim told police that on Saturday, prior to the incident, Towai came home from work apparently drunk.

Between 9:45 p.m. and 10 p.m., as she and Towai were sitting outside their home, she said Towai, who was drinking beer, asked her why she was not talking to him.

She said Towai asked her if she was thinking of the guys she previously had relationships with on Guam.

The victim said Towai continued making accusations until she told him to stop and slapped him once on the chest which upset him.

As Towai was about to grab her, she got up and entered the house of Towai’s aunt, and he chased after her.

She said Towai’s aunt told him to calm down, but he pushed her aside and grabbed the victim’s hair. He then punched her three times in the face causing her to fall to the ground, the victim said.

She added that Towai  kicked her in the head while she was still lying on the ground.
