Missing hiker found

A MISSING hiker was found by emergency responders who were conducting a search for her on Monday morning. The 68-year-old woman was reported missing by her husband who went hiking with her on Sunday at Laderan Tanki near the old radar station in Marpi.

Derek Gersonde, spokesman for the Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services, said the missing hiker was found at 9:50 a.m. by members of the DFEMS Search and Rescue Unit assisted by a dog from the Department of Public Safety’s K9 unit.

On Sunday, June 10, at 3 p.m., the couple, who are from Guam, started their hike in Marpi, Gersonde said.

The couple tried to make it out before nightfall but then decided to stay put for the night due to the darkness.

Early the next morning the couple began their hike back out. The female started feeling weak and dehydrated so the husband went ahead to their car for water. When the husband returned, his wife was nowhere to be found. The husband then called 911 for help.

Gersonde said DFEMS received the 911 call at 8:30 a.m., adding that the search crew led by the missing hiker’s husband brought them to where he last saw her.

At 9:50 a.m., the missing hiker was found.

Emergency medical technicians checked her for injuries before returning  her to her husband’s care.
