Sen. Santos wants rules for interisland medical-referral patients

SENATOR Teresita Santos is asking the Commonwealth Healthcare Corp. to promulgate rules for interisland medical-referral patients and escorts, specifically for Rota.

Teresita Santos

The senator at the same time said she very pleased that the governor signed House Bill 20-164 into law. The measure, which is now Public Law 20-61, appropriates $15 million in Saipan casino tax payments for various projects and programs, including $120,000 in stipends for Rota’s interisland medical-referral patients and escorts.

“First, I would like to applaud the governor for signing into public law the legislation which will provide the necessary funding for some areas of critical concern,” Santos said.

“By the enactment of this law, our Rota patients and escorts will now be provided with a stipend to help defray the cost of food when they are referred to Saipan. Moreover, the public law also appropriated funding for our Rota students pursuing secondary education. This can help pay for our students’ housing expenses.”

Santos said CHCC should immediately promulgate the necessary rules for  the interisland medical-referral program.

She said the rules could be similar to those of the CNMI medical-referral program which provides stipends for patients referred to Guam, Honolulu and Philippine hospitals and for their escorts.
