All set for Pacific language conference

AT least 33 delegates from the Micronesian region are expected to participate in the 37th annual Pacific Island Bilingual Bicultural Association conference, PIBBA International president Frances Sablan said.

The conference will be held from June 25 to 29 at Hopwood Middle School.

Sablan said 12 participants from Pohnpei, including King Kerberos Hebel and Queen Rihna Une Abraham, have confirmed their attendance.

She said Guam will have 12 delegates, most of whom are educators and will be presenters at the conference.  The Marshall Islands has one attendee; Palau, four; Kosrae, three; and Hawaii, one.

“Before the conference, the Pohnpei community will have a sakau ceremony at Garapan Central Park on Sunday, June 24,” Sablan said.

During the conference, she said there will be a silent auction of traditional items from the participating Micronesia islands.

“There’ll be more than 50 traditional things in the auction, but you can also find contemporary stuff too,” she added.

The presentations and sessions during the conference will focus on Pacific cultures and languages, including exploring biculturalism through poetry, traditional medicine, Chamorro cultural values, weaving, presentation of the Sirena legend and many other similar topics.
