Japan consul welcomes Skymark flight service

JAPAN Consul Kinji Shinoda expressed appreciation for Skymark Airlines’ upcoming Saipan-Japan direct flight service.

Kinji Shinoda

“It’s good news for Japan and the CNMI,” he told Variety.

But Shinoda also noted that it will be a great challenge for any airline to get passengers from Saipan to Japan.

At present, he said there are only around 700 Japanese in the CNMI, and they are not regular travelers.

In the 1990s, the Japanese population in the CNMI reached over 1,300. During that period, moreover, Japan was the islands’ primary tourist market.

The Nikkei has reported that Skymark Airlines will introduce service between Japan and Saipan and Palau as early as next May.

According to the Nikkei, the Tokyo-based carrier will first operate charter flights to Saipan and Palau this year. “Scheduled service will begin in May or June 2019 after the fleet expands. The most likely plan is to fly Boeing 737s between these destinations in Micronesia and Narita Airport outside of Tokyo,” the Nikkei reported.
