Tinian delegation OKs $79K for scholarships, other programs

THE Tinian Legislative Delegation on Wednesday approved a $79,000 funding measure for the island’s scholarships and other programs. The funding source are the pachinko and slot-machine license fees collected on Tinian.

All four members of the delegation headed by Sen. Jude Hofschneider supported House Local Bill 20-67 which was introduced by Rep. Edwin Aldan.

The $79,000 will go to the following: $50,000 for Tinian municipal scholarships, fall semester; $10,000 for the fall 2019 semester master’s program; $10,000 to purchase firearms, firearm accessories and train personnel of the Tinian Department of Lands and Natural Resources-Division of Fish and Wildlife; and $9,000 to purchase a zero-turn mower for the Tinian Department of Community and Cultural Affairs.

The mayor is the expenditure authority for all allotted funds which were appropriated without fiscal year limitation.

“Notwithstanding any law to the contrary, the secretary of the Department of Finance shall transfer the funds appropriated under…this act to an account set up by the Tinian Municipal Treasurer within 20 days of the effective date of this Act. The Tinian Municipal Treasurer shall regulate and control the funds appropriated under this act so that no activity may spend contrary to this act or fiscal management policies of the municipality of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands,” the bill states.
