Ex-Sen. Songao appointed to casino commission

FORMER Sen. Diego M. Songao  was appointed by Rota Mayor Efraim Atalig to the Commonwealth Casino Commission.

If his nomination is confirmed by the Rota Legislative Delegation, Songao will serve a term of six years on the commission representing Rota.

The delegation was supposed to conduct a public hearing on his appointment Monday, June 18, but it was cancelled because Songao was still off-island. Songao was in the Philippines for a medical checkup.

Mayor Atalig appointed Songao on May 2 to succeed Justin Manglona whose term expired on April 30.

Atalig said Songao’s vast experience in government and the private sector coupled with being a former chairman of the Rota Casino Gaming Commission will be a great asset to the Commonwealth Casino Commission.

Atalig added that Songao’s résumé and background are impressive. He has a master’s degree in educational administration and bachelor’s degree in accounting. He served as a senator in the 13th Legislature.

At the same time, the mayor commended former Commissioner Manglona for doing a superb job during his tenure on the casino commission. Its members can serve only one term.

Currently, Rota doesn’t have a representative on the commission.

The nomination of the  member from Tinian, former Tinian Mayor Ray M. Dela Cruz, was confirmed by the island’s delegation last week.

Saipan has three commissioners: chairman Juan Sablan, former Rep. Joseph Reyes and former Rep. Alvaro Santos.
