NMI Disability Sports Festival moved to Aug. 9-12

THE CNMI Disability Sports Festival has been rescheduled for Aug. 9 to 12, according to Public School System sports director Nick Gross.

The chairman of the organizing committee, Gross said they will follow the original program. “It will be the exact format based on the original plan.”

The event was originally set for July 5-8, but the organizing committee decided to postpone it because of the bad weather.

“The venue will be the same, the time-frame will be the same. Everything will fall into place. We have a few more weeks left for preparing,” Gross said in a phone interview.

The venue will be the Marianas High School gym, and the sports events will be modified and adapted for students and members of community with physical and/or mental disabilities.

These include:

  • • Athletics — track and field (sprint, middle distance, long distance, and relay races, shot put, javelin throw and long jump);
  • • Boccia — the adaptive form of Bocce, a game of strategy and accuracy, that is played on a flat, smooth surface designed for people with impairments that affect motor skills and who use wheelchairs;
  • • Adaptive softball — designed for athletes with spinal cord injuries and lower-extremity impairments;
  • • Sitting/Paravolleball — a team sport in which two teams of six play on a size-reduced court with a lowered net while sitting.

The other events include outrigger paddling and hydro-therapy which will be held at the Pacific Islands Club waterpark.

Gross said the organizing committee is still accepting applications from individuals who are interested in participating.
