RB Camacho wants to strengthen community

SAIPAN mayoral candidate RB Camacho believes that by strengthening the community and investing in it, a sustainable and better quality of life for all residents is possible.

Camacho is running against incumbent Republican Mayor David M. Apatang.

In the 2014 elections, Camacho finished second to Apatang in a four-way race.

Camacho officially filed his independent candidacy on Wednesday afternoon,  accompanied by family, friends and supporters.

“I decided to run again because I want to make a difference. It’s all about empowering the community, bringing the community together to pursue a common goal, and that is to promote a safe and healthy community for our kids by acting together.”

A retired police major, he said the island’s “high crime rate” bothers him.

“I want to work with the community so we can solve crimes together. If we involve the community in the process, it will not be hard for our police officers to hunt down criminals or stop illegal activity because the community is  behind the police and supporting them. So that’s my vision for Saipan: to empower the community and establish a strong and united community.”

If elected, Camacho said he would revive the neighborhood-watch program in all villages and encourage educational and cultural exchanges.

A law enforcement officer for 20 years, Camacho is currently the chairman of the Board of Parole.
