Saipan mayor’s office seeks host families for visiting Japanese students

THE Saipan mayor’s office is again seeking the support of local residents who want to host visiting Japanese students this month.

Yuki Kishimoto, the program coordinator in the mayor’s office, said they need 17 host families for 33 students and seven chaperons of the Sanpo-en student cultural exchange group.

The group will stay with the host families from July 29 to 31 only.

The visitors will arrive on July 26 for their 40th annual pilgrimage. While here, they will launch paper lanterns and pray for those who died in World War II.

Memorial services will be held at Banzai Cliff, Suicide Cliff and the Last Command Post at 10 a.m. on July 28 while the paper-lantern ceremony will be held at  Hopwood beach at 6 p.m.

While on Saipan, the group will meet with Gov. Ralph D.L.G. Torres and Mayor David M. Apatang, and visit historical and tourists sites including American Memorial Park, Sugar King Park, the Botanical Garden and the Grotto.

Their anniversary and sayonara party with the Saipan mayor’s office is scheduled for July 30.
