No protection for patients undergoing surgery at CHCC, says former lawmaker

FORMER House Floor Leader Ana Sablan Teregeyo said that it was only through her recent experience that she learned there is no protection for patients undergoing surgery at the islands’ lone hospital.

Teregeyo said she is a victim of medical malpractice.

She said  the unavailability of medical-malpractice insurance prompted her to initiate a dialogue with lawmakers regarding a measure that will ensure that patients and medical professionals are protected during the course of delivering medical services to the patients of the Commonwealth Healthcare Corporation.

But she said not every member of the 19th or 20th CNMI Legislature felt that it was an important piece of legislation that must be considered.

Do elected officials really care about the people who voted them into office? she asked.

Teregeyo has sued CHCC for negligence and has recently asked the court not to dismiss her lawsuit.

Superior Court  Judge Joseph N. Camacho scheduled a status conference for today, Tuesday, July 17, 2018 at 1:30 ,pm.

Teregeyo, who represents herself in the lawsuit, filed her complaint in 2015. She alleged that CHCC’s negligence resulted in her left knee and leg becoming infected and led to her having to undergo five surgeries and a knee replacement.

Teregeyo said five years of litigation without legal assistance from an attorney had been a challenging experience.

She said no attorney would take her case because “the system is set up unfairly and only protects doctors.”

She added that the law requires her to give the Office of the Attorney General 90 days to look at her claim before she files a lawsuit.

When she did that, Teregeyo said the AG did not even respond.

She said she filed the lawsuit after 90 days, but now the AG’s office is asking the court to dismiss her case because she waited too long to file it.
