Mayor Apatang meets with child models from China

SAIPAN Mayor David M. Apatang on Thursday told child models from China that the island is one of the best tourism destinations in the Pacific.

“Take a lot of pictures and show them to your friends, and invite them to come to Saipan,” the mayor said.

He also advised them not to leave their valuables and other belongings in the car when they go sightseeing.

The group of 11 child models arrived on island with their parents, Chinese  singer Allen Zhou, former professional model and fashion model trainer Yi Xuan and professional model Wang Yu.

Interpreter Monique Kramer of Discover Saipan said the group chose to visit the island. The trip was their reward for winning a children’s fashion show in Beijing this year.

Kramer said the group will perform at the Liberation festival grounds in Garapan and visit the manamko’ center on Friday to  meet with the senior citizens and learn mwar-making, among other things.

“Child and adult modeling in China is one of the top businesses there because lots of fashion designers want to promote their products,” she said.

During their meeting with the mayor, the children asked him about Saipan’s history, culture and tradition.

The mayor encouraged them to tour the island and visit the scenic and historical sites.

Apatang said he may also visit China in November to establish a sister-city relationship with one of the cities there.

As tokens of their appreciation, the models gave the mayor souvenir items which included a painting, dolls and chopsticks while  Xuan donated $500 for the mayor’s beautification program.

Kramer said the group arrived on July 19 and will leave the island on July 23.
