Owens told Variety on Wednesday that he has a “strong connection” with Tinian, adding that his father’s best friend was a B-29 co-pilot who died during a mission to Japan.

He said he started doing research a few years ago which led him to visit the NMI to learn more about his father’s best friend.

An Air Force reservist, Owens said he convinced two friends of his, Tom Travis and Curtis Wester, Air Force and Army veterans, to come to Saipan with him.

“It’s a great place to come and visit, the scenery is gorgeous and the people are good,” Owens said.

“It’s my first trip [to Saipan], and it’s awesome so far,” Wester said.

Marciano Gordon, managing director of Pacific Development Inc., which facilitated the visit of Owens’ group in collaboration with Valor Tours, said the visitors are enjoying their stay on Saipan.

Today, Friday, Owens and his group will visit Tinian to pay tribute to the 6th Bomb Group which was based on the island during World War II and participated in the war effort against Japan in 1944-45. The group was part of the 313th Bomb Wing, 20th Air Force.
