Rotarians want to see more McFun Run participants in 2019

THE number of participants in the annual McFun Run has increased every year since the Rotary Club of Saipan and McDonald’s launched the event four years ago, Rotary Club of Saipan president-elect Marcia Ayuyu said.

“We want to have more participants next year,” she said. This year, 181 individuals — 104 walk-ins and 77 pre-registered — took part in Saturday’s McFunRun. In 2017, there were 165 runners.

On Tuesday, Ayuyu told the club that they also received various donations, including gift certificates, cases of fruit, and water-park passes.

Ayuyu, the owner/operator of the local McDonalds, said they will continue to partner with the Rotary Club of Saipan for next year’s McFun Run.

This year, as a major sponsor, McDonald’s donated $3,000 and $300 worth of t-shirts, bags and guest cards.

Ayuyu thanked the other sponsors for their continued support: Herman’s Modern Bakery, Ming Yang Supermarket, Twins Supermarket, Yaong, Kanoa Resort, Pacific Islands Club and Fiesta Resort & Spa.

Club president Greg Borja said a large group from Agape Christian School participated in the this year’s event.

“The turnout was very good,” he said. “I think the response to the event was great. The runners were excited, and we received a number of raffle prizes from local businesses.”

Whit Altizer, a teacher, led the 181 runners in the five-kilometer run from the Carolinian Utt  in Garapan to Star Water on Beach Road and back to the Utt.

Borja said they are thankful to the volunteers from the Interact Clubs of Saipan Southern High and Marianas High School, and their other sponsors: Hyatt Regency Saipan, Bank of Guam, Bank of Hawaii, Staywell, Triple J Wholesale, National Office Supply, Coca Cola, and Duty Free Shops.
