Saipan Awaodori Team member featured in Japan festival poster

FOR the first time in many years, a dancer with the Saipan Awaodori Team  has been featured in a poster promoting the Koenji Awaodori Festival in Japan this week.

Sonia G. Siwa, coordinator of PDM Promoters Inc. which organized the Saipan Awaodori team, said the poster featured team member Marcela Heben, and can be seen all over  Koenj, a district of Tokyo.

Saipan Awaodori team organizer Misako Kamata was “very proud” that the Koenji Awaodori Committee included Heben in the poster. Kamata noted that  hundreds of children participate in the annual festival.

On Wednesday, Heben, Tyvie Ann They and Jaybriane Manalo will leave Saipan with Keiko Kamata to take part in the 60th festival in Japan on Aug. 25 and 26. This year’s theme focuses on children.

Siwa said most of the Saipan Awaodori team members have started classes and cannot participate in the Japanese festival.

“But we were able to get permission from their school for our three participating dancers,” Siwa said, adding that the three will  join the Tokyo Tensuiren Group, the Saipan Awaodori Team mother’s organization in Japan.

In 2017, Siwa said they were able to send 10 local team members to the Koenji Awaodori Festival which is expected to draw over 10,000 dancers this year.
