ESGR office now open, ready to serve

SAIPAN Mayor David M. Apatang on Friday led the opening of the new Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve office on the second floor of the CTC Building in Susupe where his office is also located.

A veteran himself, the mayor said it was one of his commitments to the community to provide an office for the ESGR on Saipan.

“I always love to work for and to take care of the troops after their deployment,” he said, adding that the ESGR office is now ready to accommodate the concerns of National Guard members and Reservists.

On Friday, the Saipan mayor’s office and the ESGR office were blessed by Chalan Kanoa Bishop Ryan Jimenez.

ESGR area committee chair Rose Igitol thanked the mayor for providing them with the office space.

“This is something that we’ve been dreaming about,” she said, adding that the office will be a “big help” for ESGR volunteers.

She said the mayor’s office donated the space with maintenance and power costs included because the ESGR does not have a budget.

Igitol is hoping that the mayor’s office will continue to support the ESGR in the future.

Apatang said his office will consider a memorandum of agreement to ensure that the ESGR office will remain at the CTC Building in the future.

The ceremony on Friday was also attended by ESGR Guam-CNMI state chair Don Clark, Saipan volunteers Dr. Rita A. Sablan and Joann Aquino,  Bernie Dela Cruz and Emma Peter of the Veterans Affairs Office, Velma del Rosario of the Office of Personnel Management, Rep. Angel A. Demapan and Sen. Sixto Igisomar.

In an interview, Clark said employers in the CNMI have been very supportive of ESGR programs.

“If there are issues [National Guard members or Reservists] have with their employers or questions about the law, we now have an office where they can meet with [ESGR volunteers] who can help address their concerns,” he added.

The ESGR volunteers continue to encourage  employers to be supportive of employees serving in the Reserves or National Guard, Clark said.

The ESGR is “the lead Defense Department program promoting cooperation and understanding between civilian employers and their National Guard and Reserve employees.”
